Cheek Augmentation in Biloxi, MS

As we age, the skin on our midface starts to sag causing our cheeks to lose definition. In Biloxi, MS, Michael Diaz, M.D., F.A.C.S., a board-certified plastic surgeon, performs cheek augmentation on people living in and around Mobile, Ocean Springs, Gulfport and the surrounding communities of Mississippi to add contour to the midface area.

What is Cheek Augmentation?

Cheek augmentation involves enhancing cheek contour and volume to improve the appearance of sagging midface skin. The procedure is performed in one of two ways: facial implants, dermal fillers, or fat transfer.

Cheek implants

Facial implants are used to give permanent structure to the cheek and midface area. Implants come in different shapes and sizes to accommodate different faces. They are often made of silicone that does not bind with human tissue that can be removed or other manmade materials that may integrate with bone tissue to be attached to the body.

Dermal Fillers

Fillers are often used on people who do not want to undergo cheek implant surgery. Dermal fillers often contain hyaluronic acid that acts to increase moisture in the skin and boost collagen production. These prescription fillers add volume to the midface area to make the cheeks more defined and prominent.

Fat Transfer

Fat transfer is a type of filler that uses the body’s own fat to inject into the midface area. This is especially beneficial to people who have areas of the body with excess fat (abdomen, thighs, back) from which the fat is harvested through liposuction.

The Best Candidates for Cheek Augmentation

Candidates for cheek augmentation have lost volume in their cheeks and midface and have sagging skin or a hollowed look on their faces. Women always want to have prominent cheekbones that highlight their faces. Depending on the extent of the loss of facial volume, the type of cheek augmentation differs with each patient.

Planning for Your Cheek Augmentation

If you are considering cheek augmentation, we recommend you schedule a consultation with Dr. Diaz to discuss your dissatisfaction with your face and whether cheek augmentation is the best option. Following an evaluation of your face and cheeks, he determines what method achieves your desired look.

Preparing for Your Cheek Augmentation

Preparing for your cheek augmentation is mostly related to cheek implant surgery. During your consultation, you receive a detailed list of instructions related to your cheek implant procedure.

With any cheek augmentation treatment, we recommend you stop taking any medications and supplements that thin the blood to reduce bruising, swelling and excess bleeding. If you smoke, we also recommend you stop a few weeks prior to your procedure or treatment, as smoking can negatively affect the healing process.

Types of Anesthesia

There are two types of anesthesia used when performing cheek augmentation procedures. For most cheek implant procedures, a local anesthesia is used in combination with a twilight sedative to relax and cause you to fall asleep during the procedure. It is possible to use a general anesthesia if cheek implant surgery is done in conjunction with other facial surgery procedures.

For cheek augmentation via dermal fillers, there is no anesthesia used since the treatments involve only injecting fillers into the targeted area. Some fillers contain anesthetics such as lidocaine to virtually diminish any discomfort.

Cheek Augmentation Procedure

The procedure for cheek augmentation varies depending on the type of cheek augmentation selected.

Cheek Implants

Inserting cheek implants involves making incisions inside the mouth at the top of the lip and gums or through the lower eyelids. Once the incisions are made, the facial implants are placed into small pockets made in the cheek tissue. At that point, the incisions are stitched together. Cheek implant surgery is often done at the same time as other procedures such as a facelift. In this case, the implants are inserted through the incisions used for the other procedures. Cheek implant surgery takes about one to two hours and is performed with twilight sedation and local anesthesia unless it is part of a combination of procedures.

Dermal Fillers

Cheek augmentation using dermal fillers is a much easier way to get added volume and definition. Using gels developed specifically for adding volume to the skin, dermal fillers are injected into the targeted area to lift the cheeks and restore definition. The results last several months to a year and there is no preparation or recovery involved.

Fat Transfer

Cheek augmentation using fat transfer is done very similarly to dermal fillers with the added step of harvesting fat through lipo and preparing the fat for injections into the targeted area.

After Your Cheek Augmentation

Cheek implant surgery requires about a week of rest following the surgery to let the area heal. Additionally, we recommend you wear a support brace while sleeping for several weeks to support the face and keep the implants in place. Any stitches are removed after about 10 days unless dissolvable stitches are used. There is very little pain associated with the recovery from cheek implants.

There is no recovery with dermal fillers, allowing you to go back to your normal routine following your treatments. You may have some redness and swelling, but that resolves itself within a day or two. With fat injections, you may require a week or so of rest from the fat harvesting.

How Much Does Cheek Augmentation Cost in Mississippi?

The cost of cheek augmentation varies depending on the method used and whether other treatments or procedures are performed in conjunction with other procedures. During a consultation, we can discuss the cost as well as our payment options including financing through CareCredit®.

Getting Back to Normal After Cheek Augmentation

After having cheek implant surgery, most patients return to work within a week but are limited to light work with no heavy lifting or strenuous activities for several weeks. Any swelling and bruising may take a few weeks to go away. With fillers, the results are somewhat noticeable following the treatments but become fully visible within several weeks as collagen production increases and volume is added.

Your New Look

Cheek implants are permanent and look natural. When using fillers, the results typically last between a few months to a year depending on the type of filler used.
