FAQ

What is Chin Augmentation?
Some people have a weak chin that makes their nose or other facial features look larger and more pronounced. Chins that are too pronounced and look pointy draw attention to that part of their face and away from other pleasant features.

Larger chins that stick out too much usually require a procedure where the bone is shaved down to make the chin less prominent.

Chin Implant
A chin implant is a surgical device inserted into the chin either through an incision under the chin or through the base of the bottom lip inside the mouth. This type of chin augmentation is a permanent solution to create a stronger and more pleasing appearance.
Best Candidates for Chin Augmentation
The best candidates for chin augmentation are those who are unhappy with the size and shape of their chin. Whether they have a recessed chin that looks like it blends into the neck or sticks out too much, they are very self-conscious by their appearance. Candidates have a strong desire to correct this issue to make them look more confident.
Planning for Your Chin Implant
Prior to having chin augmentation, it is essential for you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Diaz for an evaluation of your chin and facial structure. Once he has determined that this is the right procedure for you and makes a recommendation on the method for chin augmentation, the two of you can plan for your chin implant in terms of the actual procedure, healing, recovery, and cost.
Preparing for Your Chin Augmentation
Since chin augmentation is considered surgery, there are steps to take to ensure a successful outcome. Prior to the surgery, you need to have an overall check-up and bloodwork to ensure you are in satisfactory health and have no underlying conditions that may be affected by surgery. If you take certain medications and supplements that thin the blood, you may be asked to stop taking them a few weeks prior as they can hamper the healing process. If you smoke, you should stop smoking a few weeks prior to the surgery.
Chin Augmentation Procedure
When inserting a chin implant, the surgery involves making an incision along the bottom inside of the lower lip or under the chin. The implant is inserted and placed in the chin area, and the incision is closed. Typically, the procedure takes a couple of hours but can take a little longer if other procedures are done at the same time.

If chin reduction is performed, an incision is made inside the mouth or under the chin then with specialized instruments, the bone is detached at the tip of the chin, reshaped to remove excess bone, then repositioned holding it together with the remaining part of the chin using wires and plates. Once complete, the incisions are sutured and bandaged and wrapped to provide support during the healing process.

After Your Chin Augmentation
Following chin augmentation, it is very important for you to rest and allow the chin to heal. You should sleep in an elevated position for the first few days to prevent excess swelling and allow the chin to heal in its correct position. Additionally, you should avoid bending over for a couple of weeks as well. The recovery time is usually up to two weeks to allow sufficient healing and for swelling and bruising to subside.
How Much Does a Chin Augmentation Cost?

Chin augmentation varies in terms of cost based on the method used and whether it is performed in conjunction with other procedures. We go over costs with you during your consultation as well as our payment and financing options. We accept cash, checks, and major credit cards, and offer financing through CareCredit®.

Getting Back to Normal Following Chin Augmentation
It usually takes a couple of weeks to fully heal from chin augmentation. At this point, your chin feels natural, and you can return to your normal activities except for any that cause direct impact with your chin. We suggest you refrain from any direct contact sports or activities for at least eight weeks.
Your New Look
It is important to work with a plastic surgeon who can sculpt your chin to look natural and complement the rest of your facial features. With chin implants and chin reduction, the results are permanent.
