Body Lift in Biloxi, MS

Michael Diaz, M.D., F.A.C.S., a board-certified plastic surgeon in Biloxi, MS, performs body lift surgery on people living in and around Mobile, Ocean Springs, Gulfport and the surrounding communities of Mississippi who have lost a substantial amount of weight and want to remove excess sagging skin to showcase their new figure.

What Is a Body Lift?

It is common to have lots of excess, sagging skin following a significant weight loss or weight reduction surgery. The skin loses elasticity stretching to points where it cannot bounce back and conform to the new body size. This results in sagging skin around different areas of the body, including the upper arms, stomach and abdominal area, sides and back, buttocks and thighs, and even the breast or chest area.

A body lift removes the excess skin to enhance the shape and tone of the underlying body tissue supporting fat and skin. This procedure also provides patients with a hugely improved self-image.

There are two types of body lifts: upper body and lower body lifts.

Upper body lift. An upper body lift usually involves any one combination of the following: upper arm lift, a breast lift, or surgery to remove fat rolls along the back. Excess skin in the upper area of the body can make someone look much larger than they actually are following the loss of a large amount of weight. Once complete, the upper body looks toned and more contoured and enhances a more sculpted profile.

Lower body lift. A lower body lift treats the areas including the buttocks, thighs, hips, and abdomen. These areas are where many want their efforts to show. With a lower body lift, the buttocks are tightened and sculpted, skin is pulled up and tightened around the thighs to reveal more shapely, fit legs, and the abs are flattened and contoured to give a healthy appearance.

Many patients choose to undergo one of the types of body lifts and possibly follow up with the other after the first procedures completely heal. Others choose one or the other to complement their success.

The Best Candidates for Body Lift

The best candidates for a body are in good health and who have lost a significant amount of weight. The result from this weight loss is excessive skin that sags and may cause mobility issues and take away from the enormous achievement. This type of surgery is tough as it can involve several procedures at one time with a longer recovery than with a single procedure. It is important to be in excellent mental and emotional health as well as physical health.

Planning Your Body Lift Surgery

Body lifts take some planning as they typically involve a combination of procedures during one surgery. It is important to plan for the surgeries as well as the recoveries, taking enough time away from work to rest and recover as well as arrange for assistance during the recovery. Additionally, we recommend you schedule a consultation with Dr. Diaz to discuss what you want out of a body lift as well as craft a plan to achieve your desired look.

Preparing for Your Body Lift Surgery

During your consultation with Dr. Diaz, you receive a detailed list of instructions on preparing for your body lift surgery. It is important to follow them. Dr. Diaz will listen to your concerns, and he will make certain that you have all the information you need to properly prepare for your body lift surgery.

Types of Anesthesia

With cosmetic surgery, there are typically two types of anesthesia used: general or a local with sedation. The type used with body lifts depends on the procedures performed and a discussion with each patient. If more invasive and longer surgeries are required, it may be recommended that you have general anesthesia so that you are unconscious during the entire procedure.

The Body Lift Procedure

With a full body lift, the surgery involves making an incision in the targeted area. The length of the incision depends on the type of surgery and how much skin is being removed. When a complete lower body is performed, the sagging buttocks, abdomen, waist, hips and outer thighs may be treated as one surgery or done in stages. When done at one time, the incision is made around the entire body to remove the “belt” of excess skin and fat. Skin and tissue is then lifted and tightened.

Dressings and bandages are applied to the incisions after thin tubes are inserted to allow the skin to drain excess fluids and blood that collect after surgery. Compression garments and wraps are applied to help reduce swelling and provide support to the treated areas of the body.

Body lifts are typically performed under general anesthesia and often require an overnight stay in the hospital. This allows the patients to rest under 24-hour care and be monitored during the initial time after surgery.

After Your Body Lift Surgery

Initially, you are kept as comfortable as possible after your body lift surgery by managing pain with intravenous and intramuscular pain medications. It is important to remember that a body lift is major surgery that requires an extensive recovery time. The compression garments are worn at all times except while bathing until the doctor advises they can be removed. Showering is typically allowed a few days following surgery.

All post-surgery activities are very restricted for the first few weeks to allow time to heal. This includes lifting anything over five pounds as well as any exercise other than walking.

How Much Does a Body Lift Cost in Mississippi?

The cost of a body lift is based on the procedures to be performed and the extent of each of those procedures. During your consultation with Dr. Diaz, we can review the costs as well as our payment and financing options. Because some of the procedures associated with a significant weight loss may be deemed medically necessary, we can help determine if your insurance provides coverage for any of them. We accept cash, check, and major credit cards in addition to offering financing through CareCredit®.

Getting Back to Normal Following Body Lift Surgery

The results of a full body lift are immediate and dramatic and continue to improve as your body recovers. Depending on the procedures, most recoveries take up to eight weeks.
